Viruses are spread via contact with infected bodily liquids such as urine, saliva, semen and vaginal secretions. Bacteria can easily be spread from direct contact to contaminated surfaces and objects.

What can you do for your immune system to improve?

The human body is composed of trillions if not billions of cells. These cells combine to form organs or tissues that serve specific functions. A cell that dies will be replaced by another. Cells also communicate with each other using chemical signals called hormones. Hormones regulate all bodily processes, from growth and development to metabolism and immunity.

Hormones are chemical substances that glands secrete throughout the body. They travel through the blood stream and act like messengers to control how our bodies function. Some hormones are produced internally while others are made outside of the body.

The release of hormones from a hormone producing gland into the bloodstream is the beginning of hormone production. Once hormones are released they move through the bloodstream until they reach their intended organ. In some cases hormones can remain active for only a few hours. Other hormones can remain active longer, and they continue to affect the body's functionality even after leaving the bloodstream.

Some hormones can be produced in large amounts. Others are produced in smaller amounts.

Some hormones are produced at certain times during life. For instance, estrogen is produced during puberty, pregnancy, menopause, and old age. Estrogen assists women with breast development, bone density, and osteoporosis prevention. It promotes hair growth as well as keeping skin soft and smooth.

How To

What does the term "vitamins" mean?

Vitamins are organic substances found naturally in food. Vitamins are essential for our bodies to absorb nutrients from the foods we eat. Vitamins cannot come from the body so food must provide them.

There are two types: water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve easily when they are dissolved in water. These include vitamin C (thiamine), Vitamin B1 (riboflavin), Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (niacin), Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), Vitamin C, B1 (thiamine), Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (niacin), and Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine). Fat soluble vitamins are stored in the liver and fatty tissue. Vitamin D, E, K and A are some examples.

Vitamins can be classified according to biological activity. There are eight major groups of vitamins:

  • A - vital for healthy growth.
  • C - important for proper nerve function and energy production.
  • D – Essential for healthy teeth, bones and joints
  • E is necessary for good vision, reproduction.
  • K - required for healthy muscles and nerves.
  • P – vital for building strong bones.
  • Q - aids digestion and absorption of iron.
  • R - Required for red blood cell production

The recommended daily intake (RDA), of vitamins varies with age, gender and physical condition. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sets the RDA values.

For adults over 19 years, the RDA is 400 mg per day for vitamin A. Pregnant women require 600 micrograms daily to support fetal development. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Infants below one year old require 700mg per day. But, between 9 months to 12 months, the amount drops to 500mg per day.

Children ages 1-18years who are obese need 800 micrograms per day while those who are overweight need 1000 micrograms per day and children who are underweight need 1200 micrograms per day to meet their nutritional needs.

Children between 4 and 8 years old with anemia will need 2200 micrograms daily of vitamin C.

2000 micrograms are required daily for good health in adults over 50. Because of their higher nutrient needs, women who are pregnant or nursing need 3000 mg per day.

Adults over 70 years of age need 1500 micrograms per day since they lose about 10% of their muscle mass each decade.

Women who are pregnant or lactating need more than the RDA. Pregnant woman need 4000 micrograms daily in pregnancy, and 2500 per day after childbirth. Breastfeeding mothers require 5000 micrograms daily when breast milk production is occurring.
